Whakatane has the potential to become a base for international pilot training, says Toi EDA.
The economic development agency is looking into the possibility of promoting the airport as a less busy alternative to some of the country’s main airports for the multi-million dollar international training industry. If successful, the plan has the potential to inject a considerable amount of money into the Eastern Bay of Plenty’s economy.
Other airports, notably Hamilton, are investigating similar projects and a recent story in the Waikato Times said future development and promotion of the aviation industry could lead to the creation of 5000 jobs in the area.
