Toi-EDA has worked with Whakatane District Council to prepare an application for feasibility funding from the NZ cycleway project. Toi-EDA Manager Mary Hermanson believes the 48 km coastal cycleway has the "wow" factor that the NZ cycleway project is looking for to showcase some of NZ's best scenery. Stretching from the Whakatane Heads to Otamarakau the proposed cycleway will pass three important ecological areas - Thornton Lagoon and wildlife refuge, Thornton Kanuka Forest and Matata Lagoon and wetlands. It will have stunning coastal views and bring economic benefits to communities such as Matata. The outcome of the application will be known in February.
