1. Business in the Community Mentoring Programme

Toi-EDA is the Eastern Bay of Plenty agent for Business in the Community (BITC). A team of experienced business people give their time to mentor other businesses requiring assistance. Eleven buisinesses were assisted in 2010 and it is expected that as other services reduce there will be more demand for the mentoring service.

2. Beacon Business and Leisure Show

In six years, the Whakatane Beacon Business Leisure Show has developed in leaps and bounds. With the Beacon newspaper on board as the major sponsor and with the appointment of event organiser Sarah Thomas, the show has become even more popular. More than 6,500 people came through the door over three days at the 2010 show and stand holders reported large amounts of business being done. As an affordable showcase for Eastern Bay of Plenty business, this show is an outstanding success.

3. Te Urewera Rainforest Route

Toi EDA is working with a group of operators in the Whirinaki Ruatahuna area on a project to draw people into this region by making the road from SH5 at Rainbow Mountain to SH2 at Wairoa a designated touring route.

A huge amount of work has gone into consulting with stakeholders on the plan and this has been supported right through the region including the Department of Conservation and the Wairoa District Council. Transit NZ approved the concept in 2007.

The Ministry of Tourism Facilities Grant provided funding for signs for the project.

4. Free Wireless Hotspot in the CBD

Use of the Whakatane wireless hotspot in CBD is increasing. The number of visitors using the office kiosk at the Whakatane Information Centre has increased dramatically and Whakatane Freenet usage continues to rise. Many overseas visitors are pleasantly surprised when told it is a free service.
