Goals

In its strategic plan for 2008/2009 Toi-EDA has set a number of key goals. Though the plan was adopted formally only in October 2008, the Eastern Bay of Plenty Economic Development agency has already made good progress towards achieving some of these goals, which will make the region a better place to be involved in business – and to work, live and play.

Goal 1: To attract people to work, live and play in the Eastern Bay of Plenty

Objectives:

  1. To develop a co-ordinated marketing strategy.
  2. To attract more people to visit and live in the region (especially in the shoulder season)
  3. Develop and communicate policy on funding for ongoing advertising.
  4. To provide quality visitor information services
  5. To identify, support and grow events that attract visitors and promote the Eastern Bay of Plenty
  6. Advocate for new facilities and event resources
  7. To promote conference opportunities

Goal 2: To Align Toi EDA Activity with Bay of Plenty Regional & National Economic Development Activity

Objectives:

  1. To understand BOP regional and National economic development initiatives
  2. To look for and promote new development opportunities
  3. Support  sustainable developments
  4. Support research  and development of aquaculture opportunities

Goal 3: To encourage alignment of Maori Economic Development activity and Toi EDA activity

Objectives:

1.  To foster Maori participation in Economic Development
2.  To develop a relationship with Central North Island forestry group
3.  Investigate potential project(s) to use unproductive land or reports available.

Goal 4: To support and develop industry

Objectives:

  1. To identify and develop relationship and linkages with key industry players
  2. To support existing business and encourage expansion, to identify and develop relationships and links with key industry players
  3. Attract and strengthen local business and trade
  4. To foster and develop industry and sector clusters.
  5. To identify opportunities/projects to improve returns in agriculture/horticulture industries
  6. To identify research opportunities to add value to forestry and wood processing
  7. To develop an integrated collective tourism strategy to link neighbouring region
  8. To identify possible project around food processing/food park cluster
  9. Explore potential for establishing research and development centres of excellence for the Eastern Bay of Plenty based in partnership with CRIs and other agencies (eg aquaculture, native  flora, fauna biotech and carbon retention)

Goal 5: To align training and education with employment needs

Objectives:

  1. Advocate for training programmes that link to employment needs
  2. Develop relationship with education providers
  3. To work with Dept of Labour on implementing employment & skills strategy

Goal 6: To advocate for improved infrastructure and transportation

Objectives:

  1. To understand future transport infrastructure needs for the region
  2. Support Opotiki Harbour Development Strategy as appropriate
  3. Advocate for improved Broadband coverage & usage
  4. To understand EBOP energy needs and security of supply

Goal 7: To communicate with the community and partners

Objectives:

  1. To understand the communication needs of stakeholders
  2. To write and implement public relations and communications strategy
  3. Communicate with and influence stakeholders:
    1. Business
    2. Community
    3. Council
    4. Health Services
    5. Social services
  4. Where possible eliminate any negative sentiment about Trust activities from other interested groups
  5. Update and maintain Toi-EDA and www.whakatane.com websites

Goal 8: To secure and diversify Toi-EDA funding base

Objectives:

  1. To secure continued funding from WDC, KDC, ODC and EnvBOP
  2. To obtain support for projects from associated clusters, industry and events
  3. Develop key projects and secure funding from outside agencies
