Whakatane Christmas Card 2008 - A Toi-EDA Marketing initiative

Welcome to the first edition of the Toi-EDA newsletter.

Toi-EDA has been re established with new trustees, more robust funding and with experienced staff seconded from Whakatane District Council. The trust is responsible for economic development in the Eastern Bay of Plenty region and is recognised by Government as the vehicle through which economic development funding will be channelled into the region.

Over the next few newsletters we will profile the trustees and the staff so you can get to know them a little better. Trustees and staff are keen to hear of any economic development opportunities that they can help develop and are working closely with the three district councils in the region.

Toi-EDA’s vision is to “Grow the Eastern Bay of Plenty” and it has recently adopted an ambitious strategic plan with eight high level goals.

  1. To attract people to work, live and play in the Eastern Bay of Plenty
  2. To align Toi EDA Activity with Bay of Plenty regional and national economic development activity
  3. To encourage alignment of Maori economic development activity and Toi EDA activity
  4. To support and develop industry
  5. To align training and education with employment needs
  6. To advocate for improved infrastructure and transportation
  7. To foster communication with the community and partners
  8. To secure and diversify the Toi-EDA funding base

Staff are working hard to deliver on the objectives and meet the needs and expectations of stakeholders. We believe communication is critical to our success and everyone has a contribution to make towards economic development and marketing our region.

Agency name evokes early ancestor

Toi te Huatahi is acknowledged as an important early ancestor and as one of first inhabitants of the Bay of Plenty area. He built a pa on the highest point of the headland overlooking the town of Whakatane called Kaputerangi.

The spirit of adventure, entrepreneurship and the willingness to take up the challenge which marks the journey of Toi and all the early settlers to this area is reflected in the naming of our organisation Toi: the Eastern Bay of Plenty economic development agency.

The name also represents all the people living in the Eastern Bay of Plenty through their connection to the sea which is also named after Toi: Te Moana a Toi (Toi’s ocean).

Trustees bring business skills

Toi-EDA’s trustees bring with them a wealth of experience and skills spanning commercial, finance, governance and business development.

The six trustees are: Don Riesterer (Chairman), Jeremy Gardiner, Alan Cairns, Anthony (Tony) de Farias, Des Fermah and Anthony Olsen.

Toi-EDA’s staff members are Mary Hermanson (Manager Marketing & Economic Development), Roslyn Hoskins (Enterprise Training and BIZ co-ordinator), Nicola Burgess (Events Marketing Manager) and Mike van der Boom (Events Marketing Manager). Both trustees and staff members will be profiled in more detail in the next Toi-EDA newsletter.
