Huge Wins for the Pakihikura (Ōpōtiki) Harbour Project at the Economic Development New Zealand Awards

We’re incredibly delighted to announce the remarkable success of the Pākihikura (Ōpōtiki) Harbour Project at the Economic Development New Zealand Awards, held on October 27, 2023. The project emerged victorious in two prestigious initial categories, securing 1st place in Best Practice for Inclusive Development and Wellbeing Outcomes and an impressive 3rd place in Best Practice for Collaboration.

This outstanding achievement was further recognised with the prestigious "Overall Supreme Award for Economic Development New Zealand 2023," underscoring the project team's commitment to excellence and transformative impact on the Eastern Bay of Plenty Region.

The Pākihikura (Ōpōtiki) Harbour Project, was commended for its unwavering dedication to inclusive development and collaborative excellence. The project's innovative approach, spearheaded by the exceptional teamwork by a number of partners including Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, Whakatōhea, Ōpōtiki District Council, and Bay of Plenty Regional Council, stood out among the nominees.

The judges' comment, "This initiative showed tenacity and strong engagement around a core objective and approach over a long period, setting up the community well to benefit for the longer term," highlighted the project team's exceptional efforts.

Donna Perese, CEO of Toi EDA, expressed her pride in the project's success, stating, "Winning these awards is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our Pākihikura (Ōpōtiki) Harbor Project team. Their commitment to inclusive development and collaborative initiatives has set a new standard in our community.”

John Galbraith, Project Director for the harbor project, noted that many individuals and organisations had contributed to the project over thirty years, highlighting the special contributions of former Ōpōtiki mayor John Forbes, and CE Aileen Lawrie for their efforts in getting it across the line. The project will be completed in early 2024, within budget.

We are incredibly proud of the team behind this project as well as excited for positive impact it will have on the region for many generations to come.
