Aquaculture Summit A Huge Success For The Eastern Bay Of Plenty

The inaugural Bay of Plenty Aquaculture Summit, held in Whakatāne on August 25th, marked a significant milestone in the region's journey towards sustainable aquaculture development. Hosted by the Bay of Plenty Aquaculture Group, the summit brought together a diverse range of stakeholders with a shared interest in the future of the region's aquaculture industry. The event aimed to foster collaboration, outline collective aspirations, and highlight the support required to propel the industry towards its full potential.

The success of the summit was evident in the lively discussions and engaged participants who gathered in the wharenui. It served as a testament to the collective dedication towards advancing the aquaculture sector in the Bay of Plenty. The event's success would not have been possible without the generous support of major sponsors, including the Whakatāne District Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), WSP New Zealand, and Toi EDA, along with numerous in-kind contributions.

The foundation for the summit's discussions lay in the comprehensive report titled "A Stocktake of Strategic Aquaculture Opportunities in the Bay of Plenty, 2022." This report, which was a collaborative effort of industry experts and stakeholders, identified offshore and land-based farming opportunities and outlined the necessary infrastructure for a thriving aquaculture industry in the region. The summit provided a platform to build upon the findings of this report, charting a course for sustainable growth.

As the aquaculture industry in the Bay of Plenty continues to evolve, the Bay of Plenty Aquaculture Group remains committed to driving its success.
